How to install a hard drive on a computer?

Each computer technology user has a device called a “hard drive”. This computer part is a repository of data that we use daily. Some users do not have enough allocated memory and they acquire additional components to expand the functionality. Today we look at such cases and learn how to install a hard drive on a computer.

Enhanced functionality

If your hard drive is not designed for the largest amount of data, then there is a risk that the information will simply cease to fit. Is there any way to solve this problem? Of course! It is enough just to purchase an additional “screw” and install it in your stationary personal computer.

Unfortunately, not every modern user will be able to carry out the installation procedure without any help or instructions. Therefore, now we will demonstrate how to install an additional hard drive on a computer.

Preparing for the "installation"

Before you grab the “screw”, it is worth a little preparation of your personal computer.

Important! First of all, turn off the power to the computer device, otherwise - you risk harming your health. Pressing the power off button will not be enough, so unplug the device from the power supply.

Here's how to proceed:

  1. If the safety precautions have been followed, then you can disconnect all the wires that go to the system unit.
  2. Next, you will need to access the “stuffing" of the PC. In order to do this, it is necessary to dismantle both covers on the sides of the device. Most often they are fixed on the most ordinary screws, which are easily removed with a screwdriver.

Important! Set the covers aside and put the screws together. It is advisable to arrange the components in a conspicuous place so as not to lose anything.

If you are prepared, then you can go to the next stage of installing a second hard drive on your computer.

Install the computer part and fix it

If your stationary PC is de-energized, and its “armor” is dismantled, then you can proceed directly to the work.

Please note that “hard drives” are usually installed in a specially designed compartment for this inside the system unit case. To find such a compartment is not difficult:

  • The place for the “Winchester” is reserved for the lower part of the system unit in the region of the right side. The width of this bay fits perfectly with those 3.5-inch hard drives.
  • In cheap Chinese cases, this slot is located in such a way that its empty space (hole) “looks” directly at the motherboard.
  • In “premium” models, this compartment is oriented towards the protective side cover.

Important! During installation, it is best to keep the hard drive in a vertical orientation.

If up to this point everything is clear, then you can proceed to the following instructions:

  1. Insert the solid state media into the appropriate compartment inside the system unit housing. For some cases, you may need to remove the graphics processing card or RAM.
  2. Keep your device away from your first component. Such measures will help ensure proper cooling.
  3. After installation, fix the part with the four screws that will need to be placed on the sides, opposite the corresponding holes.

Important! Do not save fasteners, otherwise there will be a risk of mechanical damage to the device.

With how to install 2 hard drives on a computer, everything is clear, now we can go directly to the connection to the PC itself.

Connecting a solid-state storage medium to a PC

If the device is installed and fixed, then you can take on its connection to the power.

Typically, solid-state components are connected using the following two cables:

  1. A cable that is designed to connect to the motherboard.
  2. A cable that is designed to connect to a power supply and provides power.

For the first case, a SATA cable is usually used. This connector component can often be found bundled with the motherboard. If for some reason this cable is missing, then you will not have any difficulties in finding and buying it.

In order to connect a solid-state storage medium to a power supply unit, a similar conductor is required. If you want to avoid difficulties when applying power to a component, then just follow the old example (first hard drive).

The installation of the hard disk in the computer is completed, which means that the computer needs to be assembled back.

We return the components to their places

Was the “Winchester” installed, connected, and securely locked? If everything is so, then you can take it for assembling the system unit:

  1. Replace the protective side covers of the system unit.
  2. Secure these “walls” with screws that were previously set aside.
  3. Match all equipment with their respective interfaces.
  4. Apply power to your computer.
