Features and techniques for sewing knitwear

Knitwear has several advantages, namely:

  • Attractive appearance.
  • Smooth and pleasant to the body surface.
  • Stretched in two directions - along and across.
  • Suitable for sewing clothes for girls with different equipment.
  • It is comfortable to wear, does not constrain movement.
  • Easy to clean, iron and wash.

Important! From knitwear you can sew not only a dress, but also a skirt, T-shirt, sweater, business suit, pants and much more.

Knitwear is significantly different from other fabrics, so when sewing clothes from such a fabric, the following main features should be taken into account:

  • In addition to the usual sewing machine, you need a special needle with a rounded end for sewing stitches on knitwear. This is due to the fact that an ordinary needle will pass a thread, but a special one will cope perfectly with this task.
  • Your sewing machine must have an overlock function for processing the edge of the knitwear. This is necessary so that the seams do not stretch in the process of wearing the dress.
  • For work, you need to take well-sharpened scissors, otherwise - the knitwear will be badly cut into parts.
  • Only nylon or polyester threads are suitable for knitting. Others will not hold fabric ductility so tightly.
  • To make a smooth and even stitch, you must first adjust the thread tension. Please note that in any case, the stitch should be elastic enough so that the precious fabric property is not lost. To do this, it is best to practice on a small patch of knitted fabric.
  • Begin cutting with product parts transferred onto paper. To do this, you can take an ordinary tracing-paper and even a newspaper.
  • Cut the details, observing the direction of the shared thread, as this is extremely important for knitwear. It can be indicated by arrows or one solid line.

Important! After transferring the details from the pattern to the fabric, do the usual sewing steps: fasten the seams with pins, make basting seams, and then sew the stitch on the sewing machine. Do not forget to leave 1.5 cm of allowances on the side seams and 3 cm on the hem of the bottom of the outfit.

Do-it-yourself knitted dress - pattern

As a pattern for such a product, you can take a suitable T-shirt or dress with a straight cut. We will build a pattern from scratch. So, to make a knitted outfit, we will prepare the following materials and tools:

  • Knitted fabric (colors to choose from).
  • Threads in tone.
  • Sharp tailor scissors.
  • Sewing needle for knitwear.
  • Paper for a pattern.
  • Chalk or remnant.
  • Iron and ironing board.

We sew a dress from knitwear with our own hands:

  • We make a pattern. To do this, we take an “elastic” pattern, since we work with knitwear.
  • We draw all the details of our dress on paper. We lowered the shoulder line a little lower so that the waist could not go down. We remodel the armhole of the sleeve into a slightly deflated sleeve.
  • We mark our future folds on the pattern.
  • Cut out the pattern. Apply to the knitwear and cut the back first. Turn the pattern over to the front of the dress. Cut the fabric in half along the waist line. We deepen a little neck and a line of an armhole.
  • Now we cut the pattern along the contours of the folds into shelves. Mark the tucks on the fabric.
  • Cut a shelf. We carry out similar manipulations with the pattern and knitwear for the bottom of our dress. Now that all the elements of our product are ready, we proceed to the direct sewing of a dress from knitwear with our own hands.
  • Create pleats on the skirt and shelf of the product.
  • We manually sew all the marked folds, and then we connect all the details of the summer outfit with a blind seam. Now we do these lines on a sewing machine. We wipe the trim and cut off the excess thread.
  • We process the sides, shoulders and neck on the overlock.

Important! If your typewriter has a foot for imperceptible stitching, then use this function. By such manipulations we do the decoration of the bottom of the dress.

  • We bend the edges of the hem, neck and armholes, and then we lay the usual line using a special machine needle, which we mentioned above.

We made a dress from knitwear with our own hands, which can be decorated with a wide belt with bright stones or beads.

How to sew a dress from knitwear with your own hands without a pattern quickly?

Now we will consider sewing a rather popular dress called “bat”. It was stylish in the 80s and now even the most scrupulous fashionistas continue to wear it.

Important! This style has many advantages, and most important of them is the ability to decorate a figure of any type. So, if you sew a dress with a wide top and narrowed hips, you definitely will not lose. But for lush young ladies, a model with a product length up to the middle of the caviar is well suited.

So, let's figure out how to sew a knitted dress “bat”.

Step-by-step master class:

  • We are building a pattern. To do this, we need a rectangular piece of fabric, on top of which we leave the desired neckline.
  • We cut out the sleeves of the length we need. As a basis, you can take sleeves from a well-fitting outfit.
  • We cut out two main details for our dress - the back and the front, not forgetting to take into account your own wishes. Fold the fabric face inward. We outline the contours with remnant and draw the neck. We got the back of the product with a characteristic middle seam.

Important! Note that only at this stage you can change the shape of the neck of these two parts.

  • We circle the pattern of the desired cuff for the sleeve. Make sure that it matches the warp thread on the knit fabric.
  • Add allowances: on the sleeves - 1.5 cm, on the shoulders - 2 cm, on the bottom of the sleeves - 1 cm, the lower section of the fabric - 3 cm, the side sections of the cuff - 1.5 cm, the edges of the cuff to the sleeve of the product - 2 cm.
  • Now we sweep away all the resulting parts. We sew seams on a sewing machine.
  • Well iron the seams below the waist. We do exactly the same actions with the sleeves, shoulders, side seams of the sleeves.
  • We process the neck with a non-woven strip on the wrong side so that the part keeps its shape.
  • We pin the cuff to the assembled bottom of the sleeve, observing the unity of the location of the seams of these two parts. We sew the basting on a sewing machine, forming small folds.
  • We sew the bottom of our outfit manually with small stitches so that the work looks extremely neat.
  • Now we remove all excess threads, and then iron the product from the wrong side.

That's all the work! We got a beautiful dress that you can wear every day or for a special occasion. Most importantly, it is incredibly comfortable!
