How to shorten a coat at home?

Atelier services will cost you more than shorten your coat with your own hands. Each girl will be able to cut, tuck and hem the bottom of the product. This is nothing complicated. The most important thing here is to correctly outline the line along which excess tissue will be cut off.

Work Stages:

  • First of all, we determine the length of our converted clothes.
  • We pin tailor pins into places of desired length along the bottom of the product.
  • Now we measure with a centimeter the cut-off line of the material.
  • We remove the pins. We lay out the coat on the surface of the table.
  • We mark with chalk in the lower part of the clothes the value that we will delete.
  • Draw a straight line at the previously outlined points, and then lay 4 cm down from it. We have formed an allowance for bending and hemming our product.
  • We fasten the ends of the existing seams with a line so that they do not dispose in the future.
  • We duplicate the hem with adhesive tape, since we cut off the previously glued area, and now we need to restore the structure of the coat.
  • Overlap the bottom edge of the coat, thereby protecting the sections from shedding of fabric. If you do not have an overlock machine, then process the cut in a zigzag stitch.
  • We sweep the lower edge, focusing on the previously marked chalk mark.
  • Now we sew the bottom of the lining fabric. The top line will be the bending line, the second - we measure from the first down 4 cm, and the third line - 2 cm. We sweep the upper line with threads.
  • We hem the corners along the bottom of the left and right sides. Now we sweep away the lining.
  • We proceed to ironing, after which we sew on the bottom lining fabric with threads in tone.
  • We hem the bottom of the coat with hidden stitches using the same threads with a thickness of 70.

Important! The hem can not be hemmed manually, but glued, for example, with a glue web.

  • We remove all previously scheduled threads.
  • Carefully steam off the shortened bottom, so as not to leave traces of marks.
  • We put on the finished product, fasten the threads. We check that the length of the sides along the lower edge coincides.

That's all the work! New clothes are ready to go out!

How to shorten coat sleeves at home?

The technique of shortening the sleeves of outerwear is similar to shortening the bottom, described a little earlier. But still, it has its own distinctive features.

Working process:

  • We completely unzip the bottom of the sleeves, removing all unnecessary threads.
  • We put on a coat and ask our friend for help - mark with chalk the line of the desired shortening. We turn gradually, and this time your assistant leaves marks on the front of the bottom of the sleeve. To do this, it is better to use a ruler or a clerical triangle.

Important! Make all marks in a calm pose so that there are no distortions in the measurements.

  • We draw a solid line at the previously outlined marks.

Important! Do not mark the line on the old bending, as the factory line could be with defects.

  • Now trim the excess lining along with the main fabric.
  • Hem the sleeves to the length we need, and then align the lining fabric.
  • We bend the lining once, holding it in the place of sewing and unscrewing the sleeve. The most important thing here is to bend only the edge of the lining, without affecting its main part.
  • Sew on a typewriter to the bottom of the sleeve a formed lining.
  • We put small braces on the lining so that the hem does not fall apart. So you need to do with each seam.
  • We twist the sleeve, leaving the basting for now.
  • Carefully iron the bottom of the sleeve.
  • We carry out all the above actions with the second sleeve.

Well, your long-familiar coat has changed!
