How to wash a pillow from a feather?

Feather pillows are considered a classic of everyday life, since they are used in almost every home. However, such pillows have a significant drawback - the ability to absorb household dust and human sweat. In addition, down and feather, as natural raw materials, are an excellent environment for the propagation of microorganisms harmful to our health (in particular ticks), as well as the accumulation of their vital functions. And these are already allergens, so products must be washed regularly. In this article, we will talk about how to wash a pillow from a feather, what is needed for this.

Preparatory stage:

  • Take care in advance about where you will pour the washed and dried material from the pillow - into the old, washed bedcloth, or it's better to sew a new one. Even those who do not have special sewing skills can do this very simply. You will be convinced of this by viewing our detailed step-by-step master classes by reference "How to sew a pillowcase on a pillow?".
  • To properly wash and dry down or feathers at home, prepare a cover from a not too dense fabric. An old pillowcase is also suitable, or you can make a bag from a tight curtain from tulle.

Important! It is not recommended to make a cover of gauze, as the fluff will come out.

  • When you have decided on the material for the cover, you still need to choose the correct dimensions - the width of the cover can be made the same as the width of the pillow, and the length is twice as long. This is necessary in order to better wash and dry the filler.

Hand wash

To wash a pillow from a feather is a rather troublesome business, but quite feasible. Previously, our grandmothers did this exclusively in winter, freezing the filler dry in the cold. After that, the pillows became fresh and soft. But this option is very long and will not work in the conditions of familiar apartments. Therefore, we propose to do otherwise:

  • Prepare a napper.
  • Beat the old pillow by pre-preparing a bath with a solution of washing powder. It is better to use safe products without an abundance of chemical aggressive impurities in order to exclude allergies and other harm to health, because you will then have to sleep on this pillow. When choosing the right detergent, use our rated phosphate-free powders.

Important! Since fluff will fly around the room during steaming, it is advisable to arm yourself with a vacuum cleaner in advance.

  • Dip the fluff into the water slowly and gradually, so that later it is easier to dry. So leave it for a couple of hours - this will be enough for the smells to go away and the dirt to dissolve.
  • Squeeze the fluff while draining the water through a colander and rinsing under running water.
  • Put the fluff in a new detergent solution.
  • Rinse the feathers thoroughly in the solution.
  • Drain the water again, squeezing the fluff, rinse in running water, squeeze again.

Washing the feather pillow is considered finished. Now it remains to dry the filler, transfer it to the new napernik prepared by you and sew it tightly.

Important! Before you start to pull out the fluff, cover the room with a large sheet. And after the process is complete, thoroughly vacuum the room.

Machine washable

To update your sleep product, you can wash the feather pillow at home in the washing machine. However, here, as in the previous method, there are several features:

  • Gut the pillow and remove all the fluff and feathers from it.
  • It is undesirable to place the entire filler in one cover - it is better to prepare 2-3 small bags for this.

Important! The less filler will be in each of the bags, the better it is washed and dry.

  • Manufacturers advise laying at least two covers with fluff in the machine so that the load is distributed evenly, and the device does not vibrate during the spin cycle.

Important! If you have small feather pillows, you can wash them whole in a typewriter without steaming or shifting the filler into other covers. It’s better to put a couple more towels inside the drum.

  • Use liquid detergents. Choose a temperature of 30 degrees, the wash mode for down (if not - delicate). Also program extra spin and a few rinses.
  • After washing, thoroughly crush the filler with your fists, spread the covers, lay on towels or sheets and roll it into a tight roll to squeeze out the rest of the liquid.

Drying

You can dry pillow stuffing in different ways: on the battery, on the street, in the dryer, on special appliances or in the automatic machine itself. Let's look at the options in more detail:

  • On the street. This method is appropriate for summer time. After washing, you should remove the napkins from the drum of the machine, wrap them with a terry towel, squeezing out excess moisture. Then you should thoroughly knead all the lumps with your hands, take out the covers on the street and hang them.

Important! Shake periodically, kneading the contents with your hands.

  • On battery. This option is suitable for those who do not know how to solve this problem at home in the cold season. To carry out the procedure on the battery, you need to stretch all the lumps, and then lay out the bags on the heating radiators.

Important! It is worth remembering that with this method the feather dries up, so you need to beat it often, regularly turning the bags over.

  • On the fixture. Suitable for owners of floor dryers, on which you can lay out bags with a pen and put next to the battery.
  • AT tumble dryer. Ideal way with this unit. Drying takes place quite quickly - in just a couple of hours.

Important! To prevent the feather packing from drying during drying, you need to lay several tennis balls together with the bags, which will evenly distribute the contents of the nappies.

  • AT drying machine. The principle is the same as in the previous version - we lay the bags along with the balls.

Important! After the feathers are completely dry, proceed as if washing by hand: cover the room with a large sheet, shift the feathers into a feather bed and sew them firmly. At the end of the procedure, vacuum the room.
