Materials

Before you consider in detail how to make a bookcase with your own hands, you should figure out which material is better to give preference. In principle, any more or less durable, machinable material is suitable for this. But if this is your first encounter with the furniture manufacturing process, then it is better to abandon excessive variety.

It is recommended to start with a walnut or maple trowel, because the trough is a wood aged in a natural way, due to which it has a unique natural pattern.

Important! In principle, the same pine tree has the same individual woody pattern, so you can use it.

Device

The bookcase, the manufacturing steps of which we will now consider, consists of a lower pedestal and four shelves.

  • From below it can remain open or covered with doors.
  • We will decorate the sidewalls with curly cuts that pass into the shelf stop points.

Important! Such a product looks airy due to the use of beautiful wood and the absence of a back wall.

  • Dimensions of the finished product - height 150 cm, width 70 cm, height of the lower cabinet - 50 cm, while the length of the shelves - 70 cm, and their width - 2.5 cm.

The manufacturing process of the whatnot is conditionally divided into several stages, each of which we will carefully consider further.

We select the necessary materials

As mentioned above, we need boards with a length of 70 cm. To make shelves, we need boards of different widths:

  • The two upper shelves are the narrowest, their width does not exceed 25 cm.
  • The third and fourth shelves will be 30 cm wide.
  • The fifth and sixth 40 cm. They will also play the role of the upper and lower shelves of the cabinet.
  • We will produce side walls from boards 20 cm wide, 2 m long and 2.5 cm thick, contrasting in texture or color.

Marking blanks

We do this clearly, carefully, according to the instructions:

  • First, we measure and cut 47.5 cm from each board designed for the manufacture of sidewalls.

Important! Using these segments, we can then increase the width of the sidewalls in order to increase the depth of the cabinet.

  • Then we mark the remaining pieces of boards to determine the location of the shelves. So, the height of the space below will be 50 cm, already taking into account the thickness of the upper shelf. The distance from the upper shelf of the bedside table to the shelf located inside it is 25 cm. The dimensions of the upper shelf fully correspond to the upper end of the sidewall.
  • As soon as the marking process is completed, you can cut out 1.5 cm grooves for the shelves with a circular saw, then clean them with a chisel.
  • Next, we outline the shape of the supports supporting the shelves. The width is 10 cm, and the rounding will begin at a height of 20 cm from the bottom.

Important! It is better to draw the contour using a stencil so that all the supports have the same shape. The forms are chosen at your own discretion, based on personal preferences.

  • Then, the supports are cut with an electric jigsaw.

Create Shelf

Once we have prepared all the necessary blanks, we can begin to consider in detail how to make a bookcase of wood with our own hands:

  • We increase the width of the sidewalls from below, round off the edges of the shelves. Now we begin to work with parts of the boards cut off at the initial stage. Using glue and dowels we fasten the side parts, increase the width of the side posts from below to 40 cm. This step will add stability to the whatnot and increase its depth. To make the edges of the racks more rounded, we process them with the help of a milling cutter.
  • We cut the shelves measuring 70 cm in size, round their front corners with a jigsaw, and process the ends with a milling cutter.
  • We make wide shelves. To make them, it is necessary to connect two boards with the help of dowels, clamps, wood glue. The width of each shelf should be exactly 40 cm.
  • We cut out the ledges on the shelves. They are necessary to give the construction special strength. Rectangles 10 cm from the rear edge and 2.5 cm from the side edge of the shelf should be cut on the shelves using a hand saw. It is also required to cut additional protrusions for the topmost shelf.
  • Fitting and grinding. We carefully check how compatible all the details are visually, but so far they do not need to be fastened.

Important! In case of inconsistencies, we clean the ledges and grooves of the chisel. Using a grinder, we process all the details, and we clean the bevels and corners manually.

  • Preliminary processing of wood. If you liked more, for example, the idea of making a wooden whatnot for books with your own hands, you will have to prime it and apply a finish coat before you start working with the material.

Important! In the case of a shpalt, it is treated first with tung oil, and then with varnish. All ends and grooves must be left perfectly clean.

  • Assembly of whatnot. We glue the joints, fix on each side with clamps each shelf. We make holes for dowels directly into the shelves through the side racks. Immediately before mounting the dowel, glue should be applied to the hole itself and on top of it. We do the same with each shelf.
  • As soon as the glue is completely dry, with the help of a saber saw or hacksaw blade, we cut off the protruding parts of the dowels. To avoid damage to the surface, glue it around masking tape with masking tape.
  • All sections must be cleaned with sandpaper and varnished on top.

The product is ready! It remains only to install it in any convenient place.

Important! According to the presented technology, not only a wooden structure can be made, but also a bookcase made of plywood with your own hands or any other suitable material. If you want to cover the lower compartment with lockable doors, you can simply make the back wall and a pair of doors. The most common plywood with a thickness of 1.5 cm is suitable for this. Doors can be attached using small hinges. The back wall is then attached to the screws.
