History of the can

The very first canned food was discovered during excavations of the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun in Egypt. These were ducks fried and embalmed with olive oil in clay bowls. The most interesting thing is that after lying so many years in the depths of the earth, they were fit for food.

French culinary specialist Nicola Francois Upper spent 10 years proving the fact that hermetically sealed and thermally processed foods can be stored for a long time. His invention was put on stream for the warring French army. And in 1809 he was awarded the title of “Benefactor of Humanity” and a prize. Later, he opened his own business - a store, which was called "Different food in bottles and boxes." There was a canned food factory at the store.

Scientific confirmation of Upper's ideas came only after 60 years. Peter Ducan brought the idea to mind and patented tin cans, familiar to all of us. They, of course, were very different from modern ones. They were made by hand and had a very uncomfortable cover. To open it, it was necessary to use a hammer and a chisel.

Since 1819, America began to produce canned food. Just here canned food and acquired the form that is familiar to us today, and in 1860, again, in America invented a can opener. In Russia, canned food began to be produced since 1870.

As you can see, over the course of several centuries there were several materials from which cans were made. Now let’s figure out what we are dealing with today.

Making cans - all the wisdom

What metal cans are made of? Tin cans do:

  • made of thin tinned steel;
  • sometimes made of aluminum or other metals.

Why such materials?

  • They can be recycled again without loss of quality and durability.
  • The main difference from other utensils for storing food is that there is no way to reseal the can, since when opening the cans, the metal is cut.

How is the capacity?

  • A tin can consists of a body, a bottom and a lid.
  • To keep the can tight, the longitudinal seam is automatically sealed with tin solder.

Important! When sealing cans, it is impossible to allow alloy particles to get inside the case, since the solder contains a small amount of lead.

The alloy is applied only to the outer surface of the can body. In a sealed case, the edge is bent to attach the bottom and cover. The bottom and cover are usually the same. They are made of sheet or roll of tin with the formation on the surface of the rings, which are called stiffening rings.

When the finished jar goes to sterilization, pressure rises in it, and stiffening rings play the role of springs. They allow the bank to increase in volume without damage. After the jar has cooled, the lid and bottom take a normal position.

Important! Currently, there are many canned foods, especially fish, that are produced in fully-stamped jars. They do not need to be sealed, you just need to roll the lid on top. Usually, low cans are made in this way. Sometimes tin cans are equipped with special keys or tongues for convenient opening.
