How to glue wallpaper for the battery?

Many owners do home repairs on their own. When gluing walls with wallpaper, it is most difficult to work in hard-to-reach places, in particular for heating batteries. To simplify the decoration, many paint this area of the wall with the color of the wallpaper. However, during operation, the coloring pigment can change color, as a result, the area under the window is covered with unaesthetic yellow spots. Therefore, in spite of all the difficulties, it is desirable to cover the space behind the radiator. Today we will tell you how to glue wallpaper on a battery, teach you the intricacies of working with trellises in hard-to-reach places.

How to glue wallpaper on the battery?

There are several ways to stick tapestries on the battery. It all depends on the material of the radiator and how to install it. The wizards offer two ways to solve the problem, which we will describe below.

Method number 1. Disassembling the battery

If it is possible to dismantle the radiator, then before gluing the wallpaper under the battery, perform the following preparations:

  1. Dismantle the battery and install the plugs on the pipes.
  2. Level the surface of the wall under the putty (if necessary).
  3. Remove all old finishing materials from the surface and sand them with sandpaper.
  4. Coat cracks and cracks with plaster.
  5. After the wall has dried, re-treat the surface and primer the wall section (one or two layers) for better adhesive stability.

Important! Use high-quality primers from trusted manufacturers to impregnate the wall surface so that the wallpaper does not peel off after the first heating season.

For wallpapering you will need the following tools:

  • Wallpaper knife (clerical knife).
  • Scissors.
  • Conical suture roller.
  • Paint Spatula.
  • Level.
  • Roller with long or short pile for applying glue.
  • A smooth roller made of foam rubber or a pressure trowel made of plastic.
  • A rag or sponge to remove glue residue.

Having prepared the necessary tools and having done the preparatory work, proceed directly to the process of gluing the trellises near the battery.

Step-by-step instruction:

  • Mark the trellis panel so that the joint is in the middle of the radiator. In this case, the seam will be invisible.
  • Cut the necessary pieces of material and coat them with glue.
  • Attach the wallpaper to the wall, observing the vertical. The edges of the panels should go 5-6 mm around the corner of the niche under the heating battery.
  • Use a rubber roller to drive excess air out from under the wallpaper using standard technology.
  • Carefully cut holes in the main panel along the contour of the pipes. Cropping can be done in two ways:
    1. Using a wallpaper knife. To do this, in small areas to the pipe, press the wallpaper panel with a spatula, carefully cut the required diameter with a knife.
    2. Scissors. Draw on the sheet a contour of a circle smaller than the pipe diameter by 2-2.5 mm. Cut a hole with scissors. After impregnation with glue, the plasticity of the wallpaper will increase and the cut hole will fit perfectly.

Important! You can make markings using a compass or any stencil with a suitable diameter.

  • Carefully press the cloth under the windowsill and in the places where the baseboard is attached. Use a spatula for this purpose. Cut off excess material with a wallpaper knife.
  • Give the material time to dry. When the material dries, observe the indoor temperature regime and make sure that there are no drafts.
  • Replace the battery.

Important! Remember that the drying time for different types of trellis is different, for example:

  • The average drying time of paper wallpaper is from 18 to 72 hours.
  • In the case of vinyl wallpaper, it all depends on the composition of the material: paper + vinyl dries within 24 hours, and non-woven + vinyl - 48 hours or more.

Do not try to artificially accelerate the drying process of the material with heating devices, as this will adversely affect the joints and patterns.

Method number 2. The traditional method of wall pasting

If it is impossible to remove the heating radiator, then the process of gluing tapestries will require some virtuosity.

First of all, wallpaper the walls, leaving a place under the windowsill in the end.

To glue the wall carefully behind the stationary battery, proceed as follows:

  1. Mark the trellis sheet to fit the niche. Make vertical cuts at the radiator mounting points.
  2. Spread the cut sheet with glue.
  3. Insert a sheet behind the battery, folding the resulting valves.
  4. Carefully spread out all the folds, press the sheet against the surface of the wall. Perform all manipulations with a clean rag, as due to lack of space, you will not be able to use the paint roller or any other specialized tool.
  5. Smooth the canvas by overlapping the excess on the edge of the wallpaper on the wall.
  6. Firmly press the resulting layers of trellis with a large spatula, and perform a vertical cut using a wallpaper knife. As a result, you get the perfect joint of the material, which after drying will be almost invisible.

Important! Of course, it is rather difficult to paste over an inaccessible area with tapestries alone, it is better to invite an assistant for this work.

Homemade Tips

In addition to the two main methods for decorating a niche under a battery, there are plenty of alternative options: from painting to installing a screen, which the residents themselves offer. We bring to your attention such alternative ideas. We will be happy if the recommendations of home masters will help you in your difficult work:

  • Instead of wallpaper, you can stick a special reflective film behind the batteries, which will perform two functions at once: it will insulate the place behind the radiator and direct heat to the room. Glue the film in parts.
  • To make it easier to glue the trellis behind the radiator, cut one side from the bottom into 2-3 tapes to the height of the battery and, using a thin rubber roller with a long handle, wrap them around the radiator. Gluing the strips is much easier, and the vertical cut behind the radiator will not be visible.
  • If the battery is located under the windowsill, and there is a small distance between it and the wall, then cut a rectangle (square) according to the size of the radiator, apply glue and gently lower a piece of trellis behind the battery. With a long handle roller, expel excess air from under the wallpaper.
  • If the heating devices are too close to the wall, then gluing wallpaper behind the battery does not make sense, it is better to paint the wall space with the same paint as the radiator.

Important! It is better to do this before wallpapering. Use a brush with a curved handle for this work. On the edges, wallpaper the battery.

  • In the case when the cast-iron old batteries are mounted too close to the wall and they can neither be removed for gluing, like aluminum, nor glued with tapestries, since there is a risk that they will go away in winter, then installing the screen is the best option. Such designs are sold in all sizes and shapes. Installing the screen will turn the old battery into a modern one and at the same time solve the problem with the repair.
