Mounting skirting boards on the ceiling is the final stage of repair, when the walls and ceilings are already finished. What is the baseboard made of?

For the manufacture of modern ceiling decor, the following materials are used:

  • Polystyrene.
  • Polyurethane.
  • Styrofoam.
  • Wood.

Their peculiarity lies in the fact that they are strong enough, durable, easy to use. Working with synthetics is a pleasure. At the same time, the materials quite realistically imitate stucco molding.

Consider each material in more detail so that you can make a choice more thoughtfully.

Styrofoam

The arguments in favor of foam are:

  • low weight, which greatly simplifies the repair;
  • low cost.

Polyfoam, moreover, is very easy to handle. For inexpensive repairs - this is a perfectly acceptable option.

Cons of polystyrene.

  • Insufficient strength. Although special strength for skirting boards on the ceiling is not required, but the material breaks easily during operation.
  • Combustibility

Foam baguettes are wonderfully combined with putty and plasterboard surfaces. It is best to mount them on gypsum or acrylic putty, special glue or on alabaster mortar.

Important! It is possible to mount a foam baseboard in a room with high humidity (moisture resistant material). But it must be abandoned in rooms where there is a risk of fire. Fire resistance does not belong to the advantages of this material.

Polyurethane

Of these materials, the undisputed leader is polyurethane. Its unique properties are that it:

  • unusually flexible;
  • resistant to fire;
  • does not absorb water;
  • Don't “preserve” odors.

Important! He has only one minus: a higher cost, in comparison with polystyrene and foam plinths.

There are several varieties of polyurethane decor for sale. Sometimes they use the same baseboards for floor and ceiling. They are attached to a special glue, and in the corners they use special overlays. It is not at all difficult to glue the ceiling plinth. It is enough to use a specialized adhesive. The scope of the material is very wide.

Important! The strips are white, but they can be painted.

Wood

Wooden decor is appropriate if the room is decorated with chipboard, clapboard or MDF. When using a wooden decor, only small details can be “planted” on glue. The baseboard is fixed with screws. It is undesirable to use nails for installation. After the baseboard is attached, the screws are treated with putty in the color of wood. The same putty is used to seal joints.

For the manufacture of moldings, the following types of wood are used:

  • Oak.
  • Aspen.
  • Birch.
  • Red tree.

Important! Wooden plinths must be treated with a special insect repellent before installation. Special processing is also needed to increase fire resistance.

Polystyrene

This material has the same advantages as polystyrene, however, it is more dense and durable. Joints are much more accurate. But the cost of polystyrene is higher.Can be mounted on foam adhesive.

The right choice of skirting board

Well, it’s quite logical, before installing the ceiling decor, you need to choose it correctly. Skirting boards vary in length, width, pattern and texture. In addition, they can be convex or concave.

Of course, the choice of one or another option entirely depends on the taste preferences of the owners, but there is a set of universal basic rules that suit everyone without exception. For example:

  • for spacious high rooms, a wide and massive baseboard is suitable;
  • for a small room - thin and narrow.

Important! In addition to the height of the ceilings, one must take into account the type of wallpaper on the walls. Plain wallpaper will look better with a baseboard decorated with patterns, and smooth skirtings are more suitable for walls with a pattern.

When choosing, you must take into account the following points.

  • Weight. Here the principle of "the less weight, the better." Sometimes striking-looking planks move away from the surface under their own weight.
  • Easy care (removal of contaminants, the need for periodic tinting).
  • The width of the surface of the plank adjacent to the wall. The principle is this: the larger this width, the easier the installation.
  • Flexibility. This criterion is relevant if the room has a complex configuration.
  • Strength. This factor determines the durability of the decor.

How to glue the ceiling baseboard?

To get started, get these tools:

  • Joiner's miter box. This device allows you to cut pieces of material at the right angle.
  • Hacksaw or jigsaw. If these tools are not available, then they can be replaced with a sharp knife.
  • Pencil.
  • Roulette.
  • Adhesive composition. It can be special glue, sealant or “liquid nails”.

Work execution rules:

  • Before you start gluing fillets, ground the places where the baguettes fit to the walls and ceiling.
  • After that, using a spatula or a construction syringe, apply adhesive to the baguette.
  • Start mounting from a long wall. At the same time, carefully press one part of the plank to the ceiling and the other to the wall.

Important! This rule “works” if the walls are fairly straight. If not, then pushing the baseboard too hard against the wall is not worth it. He will repeat the roughness of the surface and will look ugly. It is much more rational to fill the voids with sealant or putty, and then clean them with fine-grained emery. If you do everything carefully, the joints will be completely invisible.

  • If glue comes to the surface during work, it's okay. With the movement of a finger, stretch it along the joint. In this case, small gaps will be closed.

Important! If there is too much glue, you can remove the excess with a sponge dampened in water and then wipe it with a clean, dry cloth.

  • After the skirting board is mounted, work on the corners and joints with putty.
  • If you plan to paint the baseboard, you must first coat the surface with a primer. It is advisable to paint a decorative element with water-based paint. You can apply paint with a brush or spray.

How to cut material evenly?

In order for the “corners” of planks to look perfect, it is best to use a building miter box. This tool helps to cut the material evenly and at the right angle. As a rule, it is either 45 or 90 degrees.

Important! Practice first with a small piece of plank, but you can be sure: the result is amazing!
