What should be the table?

A table with good reason can be called the center of kitchen life. If the kitchen is small, it serves both for cooking, and for family dinners, and for gatherings with friends.

Important! There can be several tables in a large room - if it is possible to separate the working area from the dining area, it is better to do it right away.

So what is the perfect kitchen table? It should be:

  • durable;
  • durable
  • hygienic;
  • easy to care.

Strength

A variety of things are put on the countertop - pots with water and food, ready meals, serving items, some household appliances. There are situations when all this is located simultaneously. At the same time, the table should not stagger, and a cracked tabletop or broken legs can not only ruin the holiday, but also cause serious injuries to households and guests. So durability is the main motto of the kitchen environment.

Durability

Few people like to buy new furniture every month. This is both troublesome and costly. In addition, too frequent changes unnerve some members of the family, prone to constancy and comfort. Furniture that has served several generations has its own special chic, it is a testament to stability and commitment to family values. The longer your creation lasts, the better.

Purity

In the kitchen, as you know, they cook. Ingestion of dirt can lead to intestinal upsets and even poisoning. Where does the dirt come from? Yes, from everywhere, including from the dining or desktop. How to prevent this? The table should be made of materials that are easy to wash, clean, that are not afraid of water and detergents, including aggressive ones.

Materials for countertops

For kitchen worktops use different materials:

  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • a rock;
  • glass;
  • wood;
  • Chipboard;
  • MDF;
  • a rock;
  • concrete.

Plastic

Plastic furniture is very short-lived. It is, of course, easy to process, it can be quite beautiful, bright, but it has to be changed too often. For a summer residence this is an ideal option, for urban cuisine there may be materials and more interesting.

Important! True, plastic has a completely remarkable property - it is not afraid of water, so worktops made of metal or wood are most often made with a plastic coating.

Particle Board Advantages

Quite often in the kitchens you can see stone and even concrete tables. It’s fashionable, but it’s unlikely that you can do it yourself. The most suitable material for a beginner joiner is particleboard or MDF. These materials have a lot of advantages:

  • they are cheap;
  • they are easy to work with;
  • You can choose a very effective finish, and your table will not be inferior to the factory one.

True, the stove in its pure form does not look particularly elegant, so the question immediately arises of how to cover the countertop with chipboard with your own hands. There are options, and sometimes very spectacular, so you can safely get to work.

The benefits of homemade

The advantages of a do-it-yourself countertop are obvious:

  • it can be any size;
  • you will definitely know that it is made of a whole sheet and will not break at a critical moment;
  • materials are very cheap;
  • extremely simple design that provides durability;
  • an opportunity to realize the most unexpected design ideas.

Important! It is very important to make a plane from one sheet. This dramatically improves the performance of the product. Since chipboard is sold in large sheets, you can buy a piece of any size. Factory products, as a rule, have seams that reduce strength - this is not possible to compensate for the plastic covering the product.

As for the design ideas, the plastic sheet with which you can cover your work is the most fantastic colors and textures, but the most interesting options are practically not used by furniture manufacturers. In addition, there are other solutions.

Determine the size

This is a very important point! The size of the future table depends on a number of circumstances:

  • table appointments;
  • the size of the kitchen;
  • owners love for cooking;
  • the presence or absence of the lower modules of the kitchen set and their location.

Appointment

What exactly will you do at this table? If it is intended only to be eaten after it, the countertop can be small, enough if all family members fit behind it. It is much more interesting when the table is multifunctional. It can be large and spacious, so that it would be convenient for both the home chef and the diner. But, of course, the table should not occupy the entire kitchen - the golden mean is important in everything.

Important! The width of a standard table is usually 60 cm, and there is no point in making it larger. But the length varies depending on the size of the kitchen and the factors already described.

Tools and materials

Chipboard you can easily buy in any hardware store. There you can see everything else that you need to work. The plate needs to be covered with something - both the surface itself and the saw cuts.

That is, do not forget to ask the seller if there are any for sale:

  • plastic sheet:
  • adhesive tape;
  • nitrol varnish;
  • furniture varnish;
  • decorative edging tape;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • glue;
  • staples for 0.6 cm stapler.

Saw, tape measure, screwdriver

You will also need some tools. Particleboard can be cut:

  • a saw;
  • circular saw;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill with a mill.

Care must be taken at hand:

  • roulette;
  • level;
  • furniture stapler;
  • simple or construction pencil;
  • rubber mallet;
  • screwdriver;
  • gun for silicone;
  • scissors or a construction knife.

Important! A furniture stapler and staples are needed if you are making a countertop from several sheets. This is not the best option, it is preferable that the plane is solid.

We are preparing the details

First of all, you need to mark the chipboard:

  • A simple countertop can be cut with a saw and a circular one, after having previously drawn the contours on the stove with an ordinary simple pencil. This is not difficult to do, because the sheets are rectangular in shape.
  • If you make a figured table, then it is better to first draw the contours on a large sheet of paper, and only then transfer it to the chipboard. In this case, you only have to cut it with an electric jigsaw.

Further, the procedure depends on what you are going to cover your table.

Option 1

A good coating is a self-adhesive film. It comes in different colors and textures, including wood.

Important! Its undoubted advantages - it is very easy to work with this material, you can cut it with ordinary scissors, and everything is done very quickly. But there are also disadvantages - the film is peeling off, and it does not look very presentable.

The procedure will be as follows:

  1. Strip the saw cuts with sandpaper attached to the bar.
  2. Open the self-adhesive film so that it covers both the plane of the table, and the saw cuts, and the edge of the lower side.
  3. Remove the protective layer.
  4. Paste the film over the countertop - there should be no bubbles.

Important! The ends can be sealed with an edge tape.

Option 2

To do this, you will need:

  • plastic sheet;
  • edging tape;
  • drill with a mill;
  • two-component adhesive for plastic.

For those who undertake the manufacture of furniture for the first time, the question always arises of how to cut plastic and how to glue it:

  • If your kitchen worktop made of chipboard with your own hands will be covered with this material, it is best to cut it with a drill with a milling cutter. A piece of simple shape can be cut out in a simpler way - scratch the contours and break it.
  • As for glue, there is no universal adhesive for all plastics. The issue is resolved individually, so it is best to inquire at the store than to glue exactly the material that you bought. Bicomponent adhesives are usually used.

If everything is ready, proceed as follows.

  1. Stick plastic on top of the countertop.
  2. Wait for the glue to harden completely.
  3. Strip the cuts with sandpaper.
  4. Stick on the edge tape.

Option 3

Paradoxical as it sounds, a plastic coating can be made without any plastic. For this, two types of varnish are needed - nitro-varnish and transparent furniture:

  1. Sand the surface of the plate.
  2. Apply a coat of nitro varnish.
  3. Allow the composition to dry completely.
  4. Grind the dried layer with sandpaper with medium grain.
  5. Apply another 3-4 layers of varnish, each time allowing the composition to dry and polish the surface.
  6. Apply a final coat of nitro-varnish and let it dry.
  7. Apply a uniform coat of clear furniture lacquer.
  8. Allow surface to harden.
  9. If after drying the varnish remains sticky, you need to apply a second coat of oil furniture varnish.
  10. After drying, polish the surface.

This method has several subtleties:

  • It allows you to save the texture of chipboard;
  • if you apply tinted nitrol varnish, you can get a surface of an interesting shade;
  • After final processing of the tabletop plane, the edges can be sealed with an edge tape.

Important! Furniture lacquer should not dissolve the hardened layer of nitro lacquer, therefore it is better to take oil and experimentally check the compositions for compatibility.

Countertop for sink

Such a worktop is done in much the same way as for a dining table. But there is a difference - the recess for washing must be cut in advance.

Important! In this case, the contours can only be cut with an electric jigsaw, especially if the sink is not rectangular or square, but oval or non-standard.

Of course, a self-adhesive film as a coating in this case will not work - it is better to take sheet plastic or use the varnish option.
