Where to begin?

Any case is debated if one is properly prepared for it. Before removing the tile from the wall or floor, carefully inspect it. Pay special attention to how the tile is fixed:

  • on cement;
  • on glue.

Important! Cement mortar is usually used for flooring. However, sometimes in this way they also plant tiles on the walls. In this case, there is practically no chance to partially remove it (for example, under the picture) - you will have to remove all the tiles. But if the tile is set on glue - here, as they say, interesting options are possible.

If the tile is glued, examine how it is fixed:

  • completely oiled with glue;
  • partially missed (in the middle or at the corners).

Important! This is done simply. You need to tap on tiles in several places. If voids are detected (the sound becomes more sonorous) - the tile is partially missed, and your task is greatly facilitated.

  • drill:
  • thin drill;

clothing

Removing the tiles is quite noisy and dirty anyway. Of course, if the tile is planted on glue, there will be less noise and dust. But such work should be carried out during the day in order to avoid trouble with neighbors. Prepare the necessary clothes - you need a shirt with long sleeves, long pants and something on your head.

Important! Since when working with a tile, especially planted on cement, a lot of dust is formed - it is better to work in safety glasses and a respirator.

Furniture

There is usually a little furniture in the bathroom, but there may be a washing machine, a cabinet, and a table. For such furniture, a coating that is easy to clean is usually used. But it’s better to remove what is possible from the premises, and what cannot be covered by a PVC film.

We remove a tile from a floor

Tiles on the floor are usually planted on cement, and this is the most difficult option. To remove such a tile accurately is almost impossible, it will have to be beaten off. In this case, the surface to which the tile was attached usually also suffers, so get ready for a thorough repair.

To knock tiles off the floor, you need:

  • hammer drill;
  • chisel;
  • hammer.

What to do:

  1. Choose a detail of the current decor, which is fixed worse than others. Maybe she has a tendency to fall off without your participation, or she crashed.
  2. Knock it off with a chisel and hammer. If you can enter the chisel under the tile at least a centimeter - consider that you are lucky. If not, beat back as it does.

Important! Your task is to free up space so that you can use a hammer drill.

  1. Remove the remaining elements by putting a special nozzle on the punch. The hammer must be kept at a slight angle to the surface of the tile.
  2. Of course, after removing the tiles on the floor there will be pieces of tile and cement. They will also have to be beaten off, but with a chisel and a hammer.

Tile glued

If during your research it turned out that the tile was glued, it is much easier to answer the question of how to carefully remove the tile from the wall. Especially if the back of the tile was not completely coated with glue, but partially. You have a great chance to keep the old tile. The most necessary tools in this case will be:

  • knife;
  • chisel;
  • putty knife;
  • sponge.

First step

Before proceeding with the removal of the tile (regardless of whether you need to remove all or only part of the tile), you need to soften the adhesive layer. This is done simply:

  1. Wet the sponge with warm water.
  2. Moisten the seams between the tiles, as well as the tiles themselves.
  3. Wait half an hour or an hour.

Important! When the grout between the seams becomes soft, it is removed. The hammer and punch in this case will not help, but a sharp knife or spatula is very useful. Grout just pick out from the seams. Under the influence of water, the adhesive layer becomes more elastic, so it will be easier to cope with it.

Second phase

After you have removed the grout, the actual removal of the tile begins. To do this, you again need a knife or a chisel and a hammer.

Option 1:

  1. Insert a chisel between the tile and the wall surface.
  2. Strongly but gently tap the handle with a hammer, trying to pull the tile element towards you.

Important! Usually the tile is removed quite easily. The advantage of this method is that the tile almost always remains intact.

Option 2

There is still a way how to remove a tile from a wall, without damaging it. To do this, you need 2 pieces of hard steel wire:

  1. Make 2 hooks from wire.
  2. Insert the hooks between the decor element and the wall.
  3. Gently pull the hooks towards you.

Important! This is the most gentle tile removal method. It is very suitable not only to remove all the tiles from the wall, but also for partial removal.

If you need to remove several tiles

How to remove old tiles from the walls of the bathroom, if you need to replace just a small area? In this case, the main task is not to keep the tiles that you shoot intact, but the edges of adjacent parts. You need:

  • drill;
  • thin drill;
  • marker;
  • ruler;
  • chisel;
  • hammer.

What to do:

  1. Carry out the preparatory work as well as to remove the entire tile finish, that is, moisten the seams and remove the grout.
  2. Then on the tiles that need to be removed, draw diagonals.
  3. Drill a hole at the intersection of the diagonals.
  4. Make the same holes in the corners. This will weaken the adhesive layer, even if it was applied to the entire surface.
  5. The tile itself can be removed in any convenient way - with a chisel and a hammer or with hooks.

If the walls are drywall

Sometimes tiled partitions are made of drywall. This is not a very good, but cheap option. Such a wall can serve for quite some time, but there comes a time when it needs to be repaired, and first of all - remove the tiles. A particularly difficult option is when you want to save both tile and drywall, which is quite soft and easy to cut through.

The procedure in this case is the same as when removing tiles from a stone wall, only it is necessary to act carefully. As a rule, partitions are made of moisture-proof drywall, so it is hardly worth fearing that it will get wet when you soak the grout and the adhesive layer. So moisten the seams and remove the grout. But it is better to peel the tiles with the help of hooks - this is a more gentle way.

What you should not use:

  • punch;
  • grinder;
  • a drill.

Important! If you are only going to tile the drywall - apply a thick layer of putty under the tile elements. This is the next time you repair will make your life much easier.
