What is it for?

It would seem, what questions can be? A pillow is needed either for sleeping or for decoration. Or maybe you go to her crib. This is so, but not quite. Of course, decorative pillows and those on which they sleep are the most popular models. In fact, there are other products of this kind, and you can do almost everything with your own hands:

  • the usual ones are square or rectangular;
  • decorative - in the form of circles or flat figures;
  • decorative in the form of volumetric figures;
  • rollers.

Important! In fact, any pillow, even the most ordinary one, can become a room decoration. All that is needed is to make a beautiful pillowcase on it, which can be worn only during the day. A purely decorative role is played by volumetric figures, such as roses or tulips.

As for the rollers, they are universal. In addition to the fact that they can become a very worthy detail of the interior, you can lie on them and, if necessary, lay them under different parts of the body - under the head, neck, back, arm, legs.

We select materials

To make a good cylindrical pillow-roller with your own hands, a pattern is not needed, but the materials are best to pick up right away.

You will need:

  • fabric for pillows;
  • fabric for pillowcases;
  • accessories - lightning, buttons, velcro;
  • filler;
  • braid;
  • decorative elements.

Fabric for roller

For a pillow, regardless of whether it will be with a pillowcase or not, it is better to take a natural fabric - cotton or linen. Much depends on which filler you take. If you have sheet foam, then it’s absolutely the same, tight weave or rare. For a fine-grained filler, a dense material is preferable.

Important! A new cotton or linen fabric sits after washing, so you need to wash it before cutting.

Fabric for decorative pillowcases

Since you are not going to sleep on it, the material can be anything from knitwear to velvet and brocade. The main thing is that the pillowcase is in harmony with the rest of the details - the bedspread, curtains, wallpaper.

Filler

If you need a do-it-yourself cushion, the workshop begins with a choice of filler. The manufacturing method depends on what the bag will be filled with.

Suitable for you:

  • foam rubber;
  • holofiber;
  • buckwheat;
  • buckwheat husk.

The choice of filler depends on how tough your product should be:

  • The foam pad will be soft.The roller is sewn literally in half an hour, but the foam rubber has one very serious drawback - it breaks up over time and releases unpleasant substances.
  • Working with holofiber is not much more difficult, but this material is completely neutral, does not react with the environment, does not cause allergies. In addition, ticks and mold do not like him very much.
  • Buckwheat or buckwheat husk is usually recommended for those who need orthopedic pillows. The roller turns out pretty tough. But he is able to take the optimal shape for you. In addition, buckwheat is a natural material that does not harm health. If we talk about the shortcomings, then it is only one - the shell must be dense.

Important! Do not stuff the roller with fluff - this filler causes allergies in many people, and besides, dust accumulates in feather pillows - that's why they are most often discarded.

Tie pillow

The easiest option. If you have never done needlework and first thought about how to sew a roller for a sofa, it is better to start with it.

The manufacturing method depends on the filler:

  • foam roller;
  • roller with any other filler.

With foam

In this case, you do not need an inner bag. The roller consists of only two parts:

  • foam cylinder;
  • removable pillowcases.

First of all, you need to cut a strip of foam. The longer it is, the thicker the roller will be:

  1. Twist the strip into a tight cylinder.
  2. Sew a blank with a thick thread needle so that it does not unwind - you can do this with any seam that you know.
  3. Sew the outer edge of the strip to the previous layer with a few tight stitches.

Important! Foam is easy to tear, so stitches should not be small and frequent.

Cut pillowcases

The pillowcase pattern is a rectangle. But before you make a pillow-roller with your own hands, you need to measure something and remember the school course in mathematics. To take measurements, you will need a centimeter tape or a thick strong thread:

  1. Measure the thickness of the foam cylinder.
  2. Calculate the radius of the side by dividing the resulting measure by 6.28.
  3. Measure the length of the cylinder.
  4. To this measure, add the doubled radius of the sidewall.
  5. Draw a rectangle, one side of which is equal to the length of the foam blank with doubled radius added to it, and the second is the thickness of the cylinder, on the long sides make allowances of 2 cm, for short - 1 cm.

Start sewing:

  1. On the short sides you need to make drawstrings. The allowances are wrapped on the wrong side, first by 0.5 cm, and then by 1.5 cm, bast and sew.
  2. On the wrong side of the allowance at a distance of 2.5 cm from the long side, make a round hole, mark its edges with a dense buttonhole seam.
  3. Make the same hole on the other side.
  4. Fold the workpiece in half, aligning the long sides.
  5. Stitch the seam.
  6. Turn the workpiece out.
  7. Insert the laces into the wings.
  8. Put the pillowcase on the foam cylinder.
  9. Tighten the laces - their ends can be tied together.

Other filler

To sew a pillow-roller with your own hands and fill it with buckwheat, you need to make 2 covers: one is solid, the other is removable. The second cover is done in the same way as for a foam roller. The first, which is also called a bulk or embankment, is also easy to sew. In this case, knowledge of how to calculate the radius along the circumference is also useful:

  1. Draw a circle on paper that is equal in size to the desired size of the sidewall.
  2. Calculate the width of the strip from which you will sew the cover - it is equal to twice the radius of the sidewall, multiplied by 6.28.
  3. Draw a strip of the same width, and its length is equal to the desired length of the pillow.
  4. Cut out the details - a strip and 2 identical circles, not forgetting the allowances.
  5. Treat all slices with an overlock.

We collect the bulk

There are two ways to do this:

  • on the front side;
  • on the wrong side.

Important! The first method is good for synthetic fabrics, such as microfiber, avisent or parachute silk. The second is for crumbling materials.

There are no fundamental differences, just in the first case you do not have to turn the workpiece out:

  1. Fold the strip in half with the wrong side facing out, aligning the long sides.
  2. Sweep and stitch the seam.
  3. Sew and stitch a round piece to one short cut.
  4. On the other side, do the same, but not sew the circle all the way.
  5. If necessary, cut the allowances so that the fabric does not puff up at the joints. If you did not sew them, you can cut them close to the line and sew them together.
  6. Turn the workpiece out.
  7. Fill it with filler.
  8. Carefully close the hole.

Zipper roller

The manufacturing sequence is exactly the same as in the previous case. The difference lies in the style of the cover. You don’t have to manually close anything:

  1. Open the cover in the same way as in the previous case, that is, cut out the rectangles and 2 circles.
  2. Work overlock parts.
  3. Iron the seam allowances along the long sides of the rectangle.
  4. Sweep the zipper — it should be the same length as the rectangle.
  5. Stitch the zipper.
  6. Turn the workpiece to the wrong side.
  7. Sew and stitch both circles.
  8. Turn out a cover and insert a pillow.

How to sew a candy pillow?

This pillow option is not much different from a screed roller. In the same way, the rectangle is sewn into a ring, a drawstring is made at the edges into which the cord is inserted. But if you are thinking about how to sew a pillow-candy with your own hands, you should make sure that there is lace or sewing at hand.

Important! Lace can be made from the remnants of tulle - then your creation will certainly be in harmony with the curtains. But this is only possible if the tulle with a large pattern.

You can make a “sweetie” after the pillowcase is ready. To start, sew lace along the straight edge with a basting seam, small stitches. Then - pull the thread and lay the beautiful assembly, and only then sew or sew it by hand to the pillow.

How to sew a pillow for manicure?

Such a pillow is also a roller. The manufacturing technology is not much different from the previous ones, only the fabric and filler need to be selected more carefully.

Important! It is better to make such a roller with a cover that can be removed and washed if suddenly the varnish gets on the pillow.

It is better to take a fabric for a cover synthetic, but one which cannot be damaged by solvent or varnish. Buckwheat or holofiber is suitable as a filler - foam rubber does not behave very well when in contact with acetone and other solvents.
