How to remove polyurethane foam from a wooden door?

Today, modern repair is quite difficult to imagine without the use of mounting foam, especially in the case of installing new door blocks. Unfortunately, very often during blowing of cracks and joints, it gets on the door surface. Accordingly - if you have this trouble, it must be eliminated, and this should be done carefully so as not to damage the top decorative coating. Therefore, so that this situation does not catch you by surprise, we will tell you how to remove the mounting foam from a wooden door in a short time.

Always start work, protecting yourself from possible troubles

Foam is a substance with a fairly high level of adhesion. Such high adhesion is due to the fact that the foam molecules are able to penetrate deep into the material and bind themselves tightly to it.

Important! Pay attention to the fact that during operation when squeezing out of a cylinder, the foam in volume increases significantly.

Therefore, before starting work on installing the door unit, check to see if you have protected the surfaces nearby from accidental ingress of this material. It is easier to remove the protective film, even if foam has got on it, rather than scrape off the “mounting” from an already finished surface.

If, however, a mistake has occurred, it should be eliminated. Unfortunately, fresh and already solidified substances differ significantly in their properties, respectively - different methods for removing such contaminants will be required.

Remove fresh foam from the door.

If you notice foam falling on the door surface in time, you need to remove it as soon as possible.

Important! Before flushing the mounting foam from the door, you must first secure your hands. For these purposes, durable gloves or, in the absence of such, a plastic scraper, or other object that will not damage the surface, are best suited.

This material must be removed very carefully so as not to smudge it and thereby not complicate your task. To do this, moisten the sponge in a solvent and wipe it with a contaminated surface.

Important! Before applying the solvent, check in a small and inconspicuous area that this product has not corroded the top decorative coating of the door.

Substances that can wash fresh foam

In addition to the banal acetone, in the modern building materials market there are a number of proven tools, thanks to which it is possible to wash the assembly foam from the door without much effort. These include:

  • Acetone - it is the most affordable and most effective tool. Unfortunately, acetone is quite aggressive and can easily not only not help, but also hurt.

Important! Pay attention to the fact that acetone and other solvents are not effective in the case of already frozen “installation”. This is due to the fact that so strong a bond is formed between the molecules that acetone simply cannot destroy it.

  • Solvent 646. Such a tool is suitable for those surfaces that are able to withstand the aggressive effects of the solvent.
  • Solvent 647. This solvent is less aggressive, due to the absence of acetone in its composition, therefore, the risk of damage to the door surface is much lower.
  • Special fluids designed to remove foam from mounting guns.

Important! When choosing such tools, always pay attention to their composition so that they are not aggressive and do not damage the decorative finish of the door, as well as combine with the used building mixture.

  • Cosmofen 5 is a fairly highly dissolving polish used to process polyvinyl chloride products.
  • Cosmofen 10 is a cleaner that is used for plastic profiles.
  • Macroflex is a special detergent and softener for polyurethane foam.

Important: Do not rinse off the fresh foam with water, as it only contributes to and accelerates the hardening process of this material.

Remove dried mounting foam.

Removing fresh foam is quite simple, in case you have all the necessary means. Well, what to do when they were not at hand and this substance has already hardened? In this case, mechanical removal is required. To do this, you need a sharp knife or blade. Using these tools, carefully cut the “mounting”, and then try to remove the remains with a metal brush or sponge.

Important! The metal method of removing dried mounting foam from the door is suitable exclusively for untreated surfaces. And after its painting or opening with varnish, such minor defects as scratches will simply disappear.

The real problem is the fact that foam accidentally gets onto a surface that has already been opened with a decorative coating. Of course, in this case, the use of a mechanical cleaning method is impractical. Therefore, in this situation, you can use a popular and very effective way - processing “Dimexide” of the damaged area.

Important! Be careful and work with this preparation exclusively in tight rubber gloves.

And in order for the process of removing already dried substance to be successful, it is important to observe the following sequence of actions:

  1. Gently cut the foam as far as possible without damaging the surface.
  2. Soften the remaining spots.
  3. Wipe the damaged area for a few minutes with a sponge or soft rag.
  4. Using a small, even piece of plastic or a blunt knife, carefully remove any residue.

Important! If the door is dirty, there are probably traces of this mortar on you, on your clothes, and other interior items. To deal with them quickly and without negative consequences, read our special publications:
