How to install the air conditioner yourself?

Trying to improve living conditions in their own home as much as possible, many people are looking for an opportunity how to install air conditioning on their own, because calling a wizard requires additional financial investments. As a rule, the amount for such work is about ⅓ the cost of the equipment itself, which is by no means cheap and does not at all fit into the plans of many consumers. In this article we will share with you the basic rules and principles of self-installation of climate control systems, as well as their connection.

Basic installation rules

A traditional air conditioning system consists of several units - external and one or more internal. Each of the elements of modern climate technology performs its own functions:

  1. The external unit of the equipment is responsible for the condensation formed during operation.
  2. Internal components act as evaporators.

Important! The whole structure is interconnected by means of pipes and wires, due to which the device is powered. The drainage tube included in the device is designed to drain moisture from the system and is connected to the outdoor unit of the air conditioner. According to the installation rules, this part is sent to the sewer.

First steps

Before you install the air conditioner yourself, you should decide on several important aspects of the upcoming installation:

  1. Decide which side of the world the condenser unit of your air conditioner will be located.
  2. Choose fasteners that would best match the characteristics of the material of which the walls of your home are made.
  3. When choosing the power of the air conditioner, it is necessary to take into account the features of the room, namely the location of the apartment relative to the cardinal points, the number of family members and the presence of additional ventilation systems.

Important! When planning the installation of an air conditioner, carefully consider the possibilities of providing access to the system units for their further maintenance. Also, care should be taken to protect the outdoor unit from the damaging effects of natural factors - snow, rain, icing, etc.

Work stages

Installation of the air conditioner is carried out in several main stages:

  1. Laying the necessary electrical wiring.
  2. Installation of an external unit.
  3. Laying of connecting communications.
  4. Mounting the indoor unit.

Important! After completing all installation work and connecting the equipment to the network, test the air conditioner. Carefully monitor the system for some time.

Outdoor unit installation:

  • When planning to install the outdoor unit yourself, pay special attention to checking the strength of the wall or balcony to which you will directly mount. The selected surface must withstand the load of the air conditioner, which can weigh about 60 kg.

Important! If your walls are insulated with external heat-insulating plates, then it is necessary to mount the outdoor unit directly to the wall, and not to the insulation materials.

  • Experts highly recommend not installing the outdoor unit of the split system on blocks of aerated concrete, which is known for excellent thermal insulation properties, but with negligible strength.
  • Also, masters caution against installing the air conditioner on a ventilated facade, which can provoke the occurrence of sufficiently powerful vibrations.

Important! If necessary, to mount the outdoor unit on a ventilated wall, you can use a specially designed design of a damping seal, which is previously mounted on the wall surface.

  • It is advisable to install an external air conditioning unit on a wall blown on all sides, which, at the same time, is protected from the negative effects of precipitation.
  • The most practical is to install the air conditioner under a canopy or on a ventilated balcony.

Important! When installing an external unit of climatic equipment, any distortions are unacceptable. Therefore, at each of the stages of installation should carefully check the horizontal structure. For this purpose, the construction level is excellent.

  • According to generally accepted requirements, the outdoor unit of the air conditioner must be installed at a distance of at least 10 cm from the wall, which is associated with the compressor's need for comprehensive ventilation. Otherwise, a breakdown of the outdoor unit may occur in the conditions of summer heat.

Important! When planning to install an air conditioner yourself, remember that the installation of an external unit involves the performance of high-altitude work, and therefore is associated with a certain danger. Make sure you have the right insurance in advance.

Indoor unit installation

The modern design of the split system involves the installation of an air conditioning unit and the corresponding highways inside a residential or office building:

  • Special attention when installing an air conditioner in an apartment yourself should be given to the electrical wiring:
    • Typically, climate equipment consumes about 2 kW of electricity. Therefore, make sure that the wiring in your room can withstand such loads.
    • Otherwise, it will be enough to draw a separate power supply line from the switchboard and equip it with an individual fuse.

Important! Such measures will help prevent the risk of a short circuit and fire of your property.

  • Place the indoor unit of the air conditioner in such a way that during its operation there are no objects located nearby that could impede the normal movement of the cooled air.

Important! Do not place the air conditioner above heating equipment. Also, think in advance about the possibilities of access to the unit for their further maintenance and repair work. The distance between the ceiling and the air conditioner must be at least 25 cm.

  • To ensure your own safety, install the split system in such a way that the stream of chilled air created by it does not directly fall on the residents of the apartment.

Important! If the air conditioner is improperly installed, there is an increased risk of angina, bronchitis and other diseases in households.

Popular connection errors

In the case of improper installation of HVAC equipment, you may encounter numerous troubles. In order to avoid problems, we decided to consider the most important nuances that it is important to know before installing the air conditioner in the apartment with your own hands:

  1. Installation of moisture removal tubes and freon circulation with numerous kinks is unacceptable. Such an error can lead to a significant increase in the load on the compressor equipment, which can damage the system.
  2. The external unit is not recommended for installation on a glazed balcony, because in this case it will be deprived of the necessary air circulation from all sides.
  3. Air conditioning units should be installed as even as possible in relation to the horizon, otherwise - condensate will drain directly onto the floor of your apartment
