Methods for fixing skirting boards

The main purpose of the floor skirting is to hide the gaps between the wall and the floor. The room takes on a finished look. Distinguish these mounting methods:

  • Screws or nails.
  • Anchor or clip connections.
  • The use of adhesives.
  • Using self-adhesive tapes.

Of these methods, the fastest and least time-consuming method is the use of high-quality glue or “liquid nails”. This allows you to securely fix the structure without damaging it. This method is especially justified when working with wood, as careless use of screws or nails can lead to cracking of the tree.

Important! There is a condition for the successful gluing of the skirting board. The adjacent wall must be perfectly aligned. If this condition is not met, the fixation will be very fragile, and the baseboard will soon disappear.

Mounting a wooden structure

For work you will need:

  • Spatula made of rubber.
  • Hacksaw.
  • Roulette.
  • Tube of adhesive.
  • Nozzle for drawing (glue gun).

Important! If you have to re-glue the wallpaper soon, then with the installation of wooden skirting boards you have to wait. It is impossible to glue the wallpaper without dismantling the baseboard, so you need to install the baseboard after the repair is completely completed.

First prepare the walls and floor by cleaning and removing dust. Degreasing also does not hurt. The quality of the installation of the panels depends on how thorough the preparation is.

Next, follow this algorithm:

  • Measure the perimeter of the room, taking into account the protrusions and recesses. This will allow you to correctly calculate the footage and rationally cut the decor elements.
  • Cut the decor into pieces, in accordance with the measurements.
  • For external and internal corners, cut the material at an angle of 45 °. Try to cut corners so that there are no gaps when connecting the elements.
  • After all the preparatory work has been completed and the panels have been successfully cut, go directly to sticking.

Important! The method of applying glue to the skirting board depends on the width of the decor. For a wide structure, a wave-like application is desirable, for a narrow one - point, with an interval of about 5 cm. The baseboard must be glued from the longest corner element.

  • Apply glue to the baseboard and press it against the wall. Hold for a while so that the structure snaps better.
  • Glue the next element in the same way.

Important! If excess glue gets on the surface of the wood, immediately remove it with a spatula or soft textile. Remove traces of glue with a damp sponge.

  • Fill the joints with adhesive. An ideal tool for this is a rubber spatula.

Fixing the skirting board on “liquid nails” - plastic

The difference between mounting a plastic structure from a wooden one is, first of all, by making measurements. The required amount of material is determined not with a tape measure, but with a plastic strip with an attached corner. This approach is very convenient.

To install a plastic structure, you will need to purchase additional elements:

  • Outside and inside corners.
  • Stubs.
  • Connections.

Important! Glue on plastic is applied pointwise. On average, the distance between the glue points is about 3 cm. If the walls are perfectly smooth, then the distance between the glue points can be increased to 10 cm.

The procedure for gluing is as follows:

  1. Clean the walls and floor of dirt.
  2. Apply glue to the corner skirting board. If the width is large, you can apply the bonding composition “wave”.
  3. Fasten individual elements with additional clips. To keep them better, it is advisable to put them on glue. If the panel consists of 2 parts connected by latches - only the main part needs to be put on glue.
  4. Mount the rest of the panels in the same way.
  5. Wipe stains from glue with a moistened sponge, otherwise - the baseboard will look untidy.

Features of self-adhesive structures

Self-adhesive baseboard looks very beautiful, neat and can be mounted literally in a matter of minutes. This material appeared on the market 5 years ago. This is a great option for rooms with a laminate or linoleum coating. There are different color options, so choosing the right option is possible without difficulty. There is even an imitation of ceramics and ornamental stone.

Important! When gluing in difficult places, the material can not only be bent, but also use standard fasteners for baseboards made of polymeric materials.

Step-by-step installation instructions are as follows:

  1. Moisten a piece of cloth in water and unscrew it so that it is not wet, but slightly moistened.
  2. Clean the surfaces to be glued, then degrease them with medical alcohol.
  3. Make markup. Proper markup is very important. If it is made somehow, tearing off the baseboard without damaging the wall, and sometimes the floor, is impossible.
  4. Remove the protective layer and stick the tape. Installation should also start from the corner. In the process, press the tape against the floor and wall (for better grip).
  5. After the material is glued around the entire perimeter of the room, cut off the decor.

Important! Caring for such panels is extremely simple. It is enough to clean it from dirt with a sponge dampened in a solution of mild detergent. The use of such a decor makes it possible to save on consumables, since no additional glue for the plinth is needed.
