What are wicker baskets made of?

Weaving a basket is possible from the following materials.

Willow twigs

For weaving baskets using pre-prepared shoots of various climbing plants, but the most ideal option is a willow of willow twigs.

Important! It is better to harvest willow vines in spring or autumn. The thickness of the branches of each twig should not be more than 10-12 mm.

Before weaving, you need to prepare willow rods for work:

  • soak in saline so that the branches become more elastic and ready to weave;
  • dry well.

Important! Before starting to soak the material, it must first be cleaned of bark, so as not to damage your hands and weave an attractive product.

Sometimes this process can take up to two days, but the end result is worth such an effort.

Important! The readiness of the vine for weaving will show the appearance of the plant. If the branches are wrinkled well, then this is a sign that the material is ready for use. Do not rush to work with a non-dried vine, which over time will simply lose its shape, and your product will simply disintegrate.

Barley, wheat straws

Quite common materials that take second place after willow twigs. It is very easy to weave baskets due to the great plasticity of the material for their manufacture.

Important! The products are very beautiful, incredibly light, with a pleasant golden color.

Birch bark

The people are very fond of this material because of the possibility of creating real masterpieces. If you do not know, then birch bark is the top layer of birch bark. To work with such a blank is very simple, even children can handle it. As in the case of the vine, the main thing is to properly prepare the product for the start of work.

Important! The wickerwork made of birch bark is incredibly beautiful with a unique pattern that cannot be painted over.

Other materials

DIY wicker basket

So the turn came to a method of weaving a box of newspaper tubes. Before starting the production itself, let's prepare the necessary materials and tools:

  • A stack of newspapers.
  • Ruler.
  • Pencil.
  • Scissors or clerical knife.
  • Box for decor.
  • Thick cardboard of the size of the bottom of the box.
  • PVA glue.
  • Glue brushes.
  • Thin skewers or knitting needle for wrapping newspapers.
  • Wood stain in the color of a tree (you can take any color or not paint at all).
  • Acrylic varnish for coating the finished product.

So, we begin work:

  • We divide the newspaper into separate sheets, which we cut into a width of 5-7 cm.

Important! To make this faster, put a few sheets in a small stack and do these manipulations at a time. So you will save your time well.

  • Starting from the tip of the sheet, we begin to spin the newspaper onto the knitting needles, adding a little glue between the joints for structural strength.
  • We fix half of the newspaper tube with one hand, and with the other - we wind the rest.
  • We fix the second edge of the tube with glue. Without removing, we are waiting for its complete drying.
  • We perform the above actions with the rest of the sheets, not forgetting to partially glue the internal connections of newspaper bundles.

Important! It is impossible to say exactly how much you need to take the newspaper "vine". Boxes come in completely different sizes and shapes. Be guided in the course of work.

  • We pick up a cardboard box and glue the ends of newspaper tubes to the bottom. As a result - we should get an odd number of “vines” on the sides. We leave the corners intact, later we will arrange them with a beautiful and neat bend.
  • We coat the bottom of the box with glue, put on top a dense cardboard of a suitable size. Then turn the base over. Put a heavy object inside so that the cardboard sticks well to the bottom.
  • Paving, and the field - glue the paper vine on the sloppy gap between the bottom of the box and cardboard. This can be done with a glue gun.
  • We begin to weave newspaper tubes between the vertical blanks. If you have gaps between the “vines”, then in this case, press the parts well together, well smearing with glue.
  • After reaching the height we need, we fix the last tube with glue, cutting off the excess part of the cardboard and convolution to the desired length. We bend the rods inside the box and fix with glue.
  • Lubricate the bottom of the box with plenty of glue, glue a newspaper sheet of the appropriate size.
  • When the product dries, cover it with any paint you like. After drying the first coating, apply varnish.
  • We decorate a homemade box with lace, ribbons and other decorative elements.

Important! You can paint each tube separately to get the most natural. If you do not have such an opportunity, then paint the finished product.

Round bottom vine basket

As we said at the beginning of the article, homemade baskets can also be woven from natural rods. Such products will last much longer than paper options due to their strength and practicality in use. A basket made of natural vines can withstand a large load, which can not be said about newspaper material.

Today we will look at one of the ways to make a round-bottomed do-it-yourself basket, which is often used to pick berries and fruits or go mushrooming.

Step-by-step algorithm of actions:

  • The weaving of such a rustic basket begins from the bottom. Take a pre-harvested, soaked and dried vine. From the bulk we select eight middle rods. Cut small holes in the middle of each vine and insert four of the same rods there. As a result, a cross must be obtained, which we braid with two identical thin branches. After making several turns, we separate the rods so that each rod now consists of one beam. After the work done, 16 rods went up.
  • Since it is not very convenient to braid a basket with two horizontal rods, we add one more ray 17 in a row, thanks to which we can continue weaving.
  • Having finished braiding the bottom, in place of 16 rods we lay two new beams each, and at 17 - one.
  • Again we got an odd number - 33 twigs. So that the shape of our basket is correct, we install a wooden template on the bottom.Well we press all our vertical rods to the template, we bind their upper ends in one bundle.
  • The very first rows of braiding rays are reinforcing, where we twist the rods with a double or triple rope.
  • We braid all other rays of the basket with a simple weave. Do not forget to weave a new vine in a certain sequence, removing the ends inside the basket.

Important! For stronger weaving, we press as closely as possible to each other the rows of connected rods. To do this, we use a special narrow mallet, with which we connect the rays to each other. It can be made with your own hands from birch, oak, lilac or maple.

  • After weaving the sides, we proceed to disguise them. There are several ways to end the sides of the basket. The easiest is to get one rack in the previous two. The same thing happens with subsequent rays until the entire board is full.
  • We attach a handle for our basket. To do this, take a long rod and insert both ends into the sides of our product. At the base on each side we insert bundles of thin branches, with which we wrap around the entire handle of the basket. We hide the ends of the rods by tying the handle at the base, forming a small knot.

That's all the work! Now you can go to the forest to harvest!

How to make a box of paper?

Nothing could be easier than weaving a basket with your own hands out of paper. To do this, prepare the following materials and tools:

  • Thick cardboard.
  • Satin ribbon in two colors.
  • PVA glue.
  • Pencil.
  • Ruler.
  • Empty flower pot.
  • Office stapler.
  • Thick wire for the frame of a paper product.
  • Elements for decoration of paper - bows, ribbons.

Working process:

  • We take cardboard in our hands, draw strips of equal length and width on its wrong side, and then cut them out. Turn the pot upside down, where we put 2 previously cut strips, forming a cross. We fasten the intersection with a stapler, and glue the lower ends to the top of the pot with glue or double-sided tape.
  • We perform the same actions with the remaining strips, forming an asterisk at the bottom of the pot. To fix all the glued strips, thread a separate one through one tape around the entire perimeter of the product.
  • We take the wire, carefully bend in the shape of a pot. We braid the wire with the ends of the hanging ribbons, not forgetting to glue each movement. To ensure that your structure is stable during operation, fix the ends of the strips with tape.
  • We now proceed to the horizontal weaving of our design. This is very easy to do: take a satin and thread it under one of the vertical ones, and after - on the next one, and so on.

Important! Remember to alternate colors correctly.

  • After completing the row, we fix the strip. For these purposes, you can use several methods - stick, cut the tape and hide its ends or tie the hanging edges in a beautiful bow.
  • After completing all the work, we decided to add the product with a pen, based on which we took the wire and braided it with the same material as the basket itself.

Important! For the manufacture of such a box, you can use not only ribbons, but also colored or corrugated paper and even yarn.

For work, we need:

  • Thick cardboard sheet.
  • Twine in two colors.
  • The cloth.
  • PVA glue.
  • Brush.
  • Clothespins.
  • Awl.
  • Scissors.

Step-by-step master class:

  1. We find the necessary scheme of the desired basket, transfer it to the cardboard blank. It is important to observe one rule: the number of side parts must be odd.
  2. We make a small hole inside each side element so that we can twine the string there.
  3. We attach a small piece of fabric to the bottom of the base, we get rid of the formed air bubbles.
  4. Pass the twine through each detail. We continue to weave until the thread is tightly woven to the very top. Do not forget to fix the position of the walls with clothespins.
  5. By the same principle, we interlace the upper part of the basket with a different color.
  6. We decorate the finished product with buttons, lace or ribbons.
