DIY chair covers

The chair is an indispensable piece of furniture for any room. In order for it to fit perfectly into any interior, designers use special covers. DIY chair cover - what is needed?

Regardless of which case you want to get and what its purpose is, before starting work, check the availability of all the necessary tools and materials:

  1. fabric of the required length;
  2. threads in fabric color;
  3. scissors;
  4. chalk or a bar of soap;
  5. tape measure;
  6. sewing pins;
  7. iron;
  8. paper or roll of old wallpaper;
  9. sewing machine.

Important! To sew a cloak on a chair, you must first find out the required footage of the material. To calculate the required fabric length, there are approximate data on the consumption of material with a width of 150 cm:

  • 1 m for a cloak for office furniture;
  • 2 m for a cover with frills on a kitchen piece of furniture.

The color of the material depends on your preferences and the interior of the room in which the chair will be located.

Material selection

The future use of furniture affects the choice of fabric colors. Designers give some tips in this matter:

  1. For the living room or bedroom, you can choose the fabric that is most suitable for the color of the wallpaper or the interior as a whole.
  2. For the kitchen, it is advisable to give preference to fabrics that do not deteriorate from frequent washes. Experts advise using material in dark colors or with a small motley pattern for sewing a wrap on a kitchen chair, which will hide the possible appearance of stains.
  3. For a children's room - on the contrary, choose a bright fabric. In this choice you need to find a healthy balance between the practicality of the fabric and its combination with the rest of the interior.
  4. For furniture that moves around the house, you need to find the optimal shade suitable for all rooms. For example, if the tone of the walls coincides throughout the room, then the ideal choice of fabric will be the color of the wallpaper.

Important! Do-it-yourself seat covers for chairs can be sewn from old bedspreads or tablecloths. Cape for this piece of furniture should not be knocked out of the general interior style of the room. Even with a contrasting combination of colors, covers should harmoniously fit into the overall background of the apartment.

Pattern and cutting fabric

To start sewing a cape, you must first create a pattern. Similar details are needed for proper cutting of the material. As a result, do-it-yourself chair covers made of fabric will sit much better, unlike models without using a sketch.

Most often, for chairs with a backrest, a three-piece cover is used: two on the back and one on the seat. Details are stitched together along the outer edge of the chair. The option of a cloak of three independent parts is more complicated in execution, but it is much easier to wash it.

To make a pattern, you need:

  • For beginners, experienced seamstresses recommend simply attaching old wallpapers or newspapers to the seat and back of the chair. Then you should circle them around the perimeter with a pencil and cut out the sketch.

Important! Be careful when transferring the contour of a chair to paper, since the success of the final result depends on the correct size.

  • Next, you need to transfer the patterns to the fabric and cut with allowance for the seam allowance.

Important! As a rule, allowances for making chair covers are about 5 cm.

  • Attach the future product to the chair and mark the location of the ties.

Important! As ties can be used and linen gum sewn into the product.

  • After that, you can start sewing the cape.

Important! It is not recommended for the kitchen to use long covers for furniture. They often get dirty and therefore quickly become worthless. In any case, no matter what model of the cape you choose, it is worth taking care of simply removing them from the washing chair.

Stages of sewing a cover

After cutting the details, you can proceed directly to sewing the capes on the chair with or without a back.

Your next steps:

  • Fold the details of the seat cover with the front part to each other, sweep them so that one short side remains free. This is necessary to turn the product out.
  • When sewing a back cover, you need to leave one short side free in order to put the product through this hole.
  • The backrest cover can be used separately from the second part, or it can be integral with the seat cover and connected at the bottom.
  • Sew the details on the machine and process the seams on the overlock.
  • Lastly, ties, frills, fringes are sewn, if they are provided for by the design.

Important! It is worth remembering that frills and fringes are sewn along the edge of the cover around the perimeter, and the ties in the places designated in advance.

  • To create beautiful ruffles, you must first fix the folds on the prepared strips of fabric with pins.

Important! Be careful with the location of the seams - they should all be on the inside of the product, not visible to the eye.
