Scolopendras - who is it?

Externally, the scolopendra is similar to a large brownish worm with legs. This is a nocturnal animal, like most predators. During the day, it prefers to hide in a secluded place.

Important! Scolopendras are prevalent mainly in the southern regions (Crimea, the Caucasus, the Mediterranean), but sometimes they do not disdain apartments in northern cities.

Millipedes love places with high humidity, so they often settle in bathrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. They sometimes crawl from wet basements to apartments, and by no means alone. If you find a giant millipede at home, then it is likely that you will soon meet its "comrades."

Important! Scolopendras 10-15 cm long settle in apartments, sometimes more impressive (up to 30 cm) individuals come across. The insect is covered with a fairly strong shell. It is not so easy to slam a slipper of such a “beast”; one must know special ways and means how to get rid of scolopendras.

Are scolopendras dangerous?

If you do not disturb the millipede, it will not be aggressive. Otherwise, the scolopendra can cause a fairly sensitive bite.

Important! Every year in Turkey, about 5 thousand bites of this insect are recorded. The body reacts to the scolopendra venom quite rapidly. The affected area turns red, swells, itchy skin appears, the temperature rises to 39 degrees. The painful condition lasts about two days, then passes.

Scolopendras living in more northern latitudes are less toxic. They are dangerous only for children, people with weakened immune systems and people suffering from allergic reactions. If a millipede runs over a person’s body, then it leaves a trace of burning mucus on the skin. The skin turns red, but serious consequences, as a rule, do not happen.

We fight with the scolopendra

How to get rid of scolopendra in the house? “Killing a millipede is much harder than we would like.” A flat body, protected by strong “armor”, is not sensitive to blows with a slipper, a folded newspaper or other improvised means. It is much easier to put on durable gloves and throw the unwanted guest out of the house.

You can fight with scolopendras using chemicals such as Raid, Dichlorvos or Raptor. Practice shows that it takes a long time to spray on millipedes: from 10 to 15 minutes.

Important! If you set out to destroy the millipedes completely, you need to move the furniture and carefully examine all the cracks in the kitchen and in the bathroom.

A more effective solution is to contact a special disinfestation company. Your kitchen or bathroom will be treated with special gas. At the same time, get rid of other insects, which, unfortunately, are enough in apartments and in private houses.

Important! If you notice a giant scolopendra in the house, then caution will not be superfluous.Do not go around the house barefoot, do not forget to check clothes, shoes and bedding. This will allow you to avoid an unpleasant encounter with an eerie-looking insect.

Flytrap - not so scary, but still get rid

Sometimes people confuse two completely different bio species - flytraps and scolopendras. This is such a common mistake that the innocent flycatcher received the proud and formidable name of the home scolopendra. They also call her the centipede.

The flycatcher is small in size: only 3.5-6.0 cm. Its color is grayish or brown, with characteristic stripes along the body. A flycatcher does not pose the slightest danger either to a person or to pets living in a house. The only minus of this neighborhood is that the flytrap looks a little unaesthetic. Moreover, it benefits people by eating cockroaches, moths, spiders and other insects that annoy a person much more.

Important! Home scolopendra does not form colonies, like ants or cockroaches. Therefore, if you want to get rid of the centipede, just throw it out of the house. In the worst case, you will have to repeat this manipulation a couple of times.

Here are some answers to the question “Scolopendra home - how to get rid of it?”:

  • Use insecticidal aerosol to kill crawling insects.
  • Make your home unattractive to flytraps, which means getting rid of excess moisture. If you get a good habit of airing a damp pantry or regularly wiping water in the kitchen with your own hands, there is nothing for centipedes to do in such a house.
  • Use sticky traps, placing them under the beds, under the kitchen furniture and in other secluded places. Scolopendra in your house is not so much, so catching them one at a time is not difficult.
  • Combat other domestic insects. This destroys the feed base of the home scolopendra.
  • Carefully inspect the floors for cracks or crevices. If you carefully close them, the flycatcher simply can not get into the living room. Can't close the cracks securely? Treat them with insecticidal gels such as Fas or Sturm, and you will no longer have a question how to get rid of scolopendras.
  • If you live in a private or country house, pay attention to the blockages of leaves in the yard, heaps of uncleaned construction waste. These are attractive spots for centipedes, so clean up the yard.
  • Turn to professionals, in the arsenal of which there are likely to be means of destroying scolopendras.

Important! Pets also contribute to the fight against harmful insects. For example, cats hunt centipedes quite successfully and enjoy them.
