Plastic bath corner - installation

A rather complicated microclimate reigns in any bathroom, which is why it is necessary to select the finishing materials for the repair of this room as carefully as possible. The inability to constantly ventilate the bathroom, a high level of humidity, frequent temperature changes adversely affect the finish of all surfaces, which leads to their rapid wear. Therefore, during repair it is important to take care of isolating all possible joints, gaps, where moisture can penetrate. And the most vulnerable place, where dampness constantly occurs, mold is formed, an unpleasant smell can be called the gap between the wall and the bathroom. To solve this problem, craftsmen fasten a corner on a plastic bathtub. Installing this useful element does not take much time, but it is considered quite a useful event. Actually about how and where to use such corners, we will talk in this article.

Varieties of bathroom corners

Before you learn how to properly install a plastic corner on the bath, you should understand what they generally are in order to choose the best option for your home. The people also call them borders, which are an inexpensive, practical tool that allows you to eliminate the gaps between the walls and fonts.

Important! More often, such gaps arise due to wall irregularities, violations of the installation technology of the bathtub, or a mismatch of its size with the room parameters. They are made, as a rule, of polyvinyl chloride, and they are a regular bar in the form of a corner with a width of 3 to 6 cm and a length of 1.8 to 3 meters. Such borders can easily be fixed independently with liquid nails or silicone sealant.

There are such varieties of corners:

  • Internal borders. These are the corners that are installed in the process of facing the walls with tiled materials, and then the bath sides are mounted on top of them. Thanks to this design, it is possible to reliably isolate the joints between the wall and the bowl from moisture.
  • External curbs. These are plastic corners that are mounted on top of the sides of the bowl. In other words, these are slats curved in the form of an angle of 45 degrees. Such self-adhesive sides do not allow water to penetrate between the wall and the bathtub, since all the liquid flows through them into the tank.
  • Folding corners for a bathroom. They consist of two parts - internal and decorative external side. Their installation is more complicated, but they perfectly protect against the formation of mold and moisture.

Important! To choose specifically which type of waterproofing border is right for you, you need to rely on the features of the situation:

  • If you need to close a hole between a wall and an old bathroom, then it is better to get a self-adhesive corner.
  • For new plumbing, durable collapsible sides are more suitable, because you need to attach a corner to the bathtub in this case during the repair work.

Advantages of bath corners

Before specialized devices for insulating joints between the wall and the bowl appeared on the market, craftsmen used improvised means, for example, thickened oil paint or moisture-resistant cement. But, unfortunately, such measures were temporary, since they had to regularly re-cover the cracks.

Plastic corners have become a real rescue. They completely solved the problem of water flowing into the formed gaps. Their advantages include:

  1. Ease of installation. Even a person who does not understand repair work at all understands how to install a corner in the bathroom. Indeed, fixing it is simple, you just need to use liquid nails or a sealant.
  2. Resistance to changeable microclimate in a bathroom. Since plastic is a very practical material, it is not afraid of dampness, direct contact with detergents, water and mold. That is why such borders serve for a very long time.
  3. Simplicity in leaving. Such materials are completely undemanding in this regard - it is enough to occasionally wash the corners with soapy water or an ordinary sponge.
  4. Reliability. Borders do not allow water to flow into the gap between the bathtub and the wall due to its smooth design, and thanks to this, the liquid does not stagnate in them.

Important! It depends on the correct choice of the corner, how well you seal the joints between the bathroom and the surface of the wall. In order not to make a mistake and avoid flowing of water or splashes during the use of the shower, choose sides 2-4 cm wide wider than the gaps themselves.

How to install a corner on a new bath?

So, you have purchased new plumbing and bath corners. How to install them we will consider further. As soon as a brand new bathtub is installed, you need to take care of sealing the joint between it and the wall before you start using it.

Materials for work

To install the sides you will need, in addition to themselves:

  • sealant;
  • masking tape;
  • antiseptic;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw.

We perform the installation as follows:

  1. The sides of the bowl itself, which are adjacent to the wall, must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt with a sponge and soap solution.
  2. Now we measure the distance from the side of the bathtub corresponding to the height of the curb, then at this level we fix masking tape in order to protect the brand new wall decoration from dirt.
  3. The sides of the plumbing and the adjacent wall are treated with an antiseptic and a degreasing agent so that the corner sticks better.
  4. We fill the gap between the wall and the bath with sealant, let it dry thoroughly within a few days.
  5. We cut the plastic corners with a jigsaw or a hacksaw at an angle of 45 degrees of the right size, apply liquid nails or sealant to them, and carefully press them to the surface.
  6. The edges of the sides are closed with special plugs, we give the design to dry for several days.

Important! Keep in mind that 90 degree corner borders last no more than two years due to the fact that due to an unsuccessful design, water constantly accumulates in them and the fungus develops. Over time, they darken, start to smell unpleasant and breed unsanitary conditions. Of course, you can get rid of mold, but only for a while and the corner will still have to be replaced.

How to install a border on an old bathtub?

When the bath is operated for a rather long time, the joints between it and the wall naturally wear out, so they have to be repaired. The plastic border is great for this, since its installation does not require dismantling of the finishing coating of the walls and does not at all spoil the appearance of the room.

In this case, you need to figure out carefully how to fix the tape. The corner is mounted on the bath in the following order:

  1. We dismantle the old corners with a knife or spatula.
  2. We remove the old sealant from the joint. If it is difficult to do this with improvised tools, you can use some kind of chemical composition.
  3. We remove mold from the walls and sides of the bath with an antiseptic.
  4. We clean the surface from dust and dirt with a detergent, and then with alcohol, degreasing acetone or a detergent containing acid.
  5. We fill the joint with a new silicone-based sealant.
  6. So that the sealant does not get on the wall and the edges of the bath, you need to protect them with masking tape, and this is important so as not to spoil the decorative design of these surfaces.
  7. We cut the corners with a jigsaw or knife and make sure that the joints are smooth, strictly at an angle of 45 degrees.
  8. Apply sealant to the sides and press them tightly against the wall and the edge of the bath.
  9. Remove excess sealant with a normal rag.
  10. Be sure to put on the caps on the edges of the sides.
