Why do you have to sharpen knives?

There are several reasons why blades lose their sharpness:

  • The most common reason that cutters quickly become blunt, sadly, is the poor quality of the metal from which they are made. Today, the bulk of the goods comes to us from China and, unfortunately, quality often suffers. We are glad that we buy a thing cheaply, but, as a rule, this joy is short-lived - until the first breakdown.
  • Another reason is the formation of small chips in the place of contact of the movable and stationary cutting elements. Despite the fact that we mainly twist soft foods, such as meat, it comes across small bones and tendons that fall on the cutting surface of the knife. This leads to a gradual blunting of the blade.
  • With improper use, the metal from which the knives are made begins to oxidize and rust.

Important! If you notice that your meat grinder has started to “chew” meat, then it’s time to sharpen the knives.

Today you can easily buy a new knife for any type of meat grinder or grind an old one in a workshop. But this requires additional costs, in addition, there are situations when you urgently need to twist something, the process is started, and your meat grinder refuses to cooperate.

Important! The knives of any meat grinder have the same shape, the only difference is how the parts are scrolled - manually or by an electric motor. Therefore, the methods of sharpening knives are suitable for any type of device.

How to sharpen knives?

There are several nuances that need to be considered when sharpening knives for a meat grinder:

  • Two knives are involved in the product twisting - this is a fixed disk with multiple holes and a four-blade cutter (a rotating part, due to which the main grinding occurs). You need to sharpen both.
  • Before sharpening, the parts must be thoroughly washed and dried.
  • Previously, it is advisable to treat the knives with vegetable or sunflower oil and leave for several minutes. Do the same with the tool that you will use. This will reduce the risk of scratches and chips.
  • When sharpening, try to press the center of the part to the tool - this will ensure a more uniform removal of the metal layer.

Important! Many manufacturers of modern electric meat grinders promise us a magic unit, in which the knives do not blunt and self-sharpen. But this is just an advertisement, since there are no knives that will remain perfectly sharpened throughout the entire service life of the devices. Well, or this device will have a very short life.

How can I sharpen a meat grinder knife at home?

There are several ways to sharpen a dull knife from a meat grinder without resorting to the services of craftsmen.

With a grindstone

This method is suitable for not very dull blades:

  1. Prepare a stone whose area will be larger than the area of the knife and fix it on a flat surface.
  2. The stone can be moistened with water before work.
  3. Sharpen the cutter with the side that, when assembled, comes into contact with the hole disc.
  4. Perform clockwise movements by evenly pressing the knife.
  5. When the entire surface of the knife becomes uniformly shiny, then it is ground.
  6. Then you need to sharpen and the knife-mesh (disk with holes). It is also sharpened by the side of the adjoining movable knife.
  7. Rinse both knives in a stream of warm water.
  8. Collect and check the meat grinder.

Important! It is desirable to sharpen blades manually, without using automatic machines. When heated, the metal may lose its properties. If the knife is hot, do not cool it under cold water. Pause for the knife to cool on its own.

With a grinder

This is a very simple way to grind a meat grinder knife at home on your own, provided that you have a grinder. This is done using a rotating grinding wheel:

  1. Before starting work, a special abrasive paste is applied to the surface of the disc.
  2. It is left for 15 minutes - during this time it dries and the surface becomes rough.
  3. Now the machine can be turned on and the grinding process started.
  4. It is best to wear gloves to protect your hands from injury.
  5. Gently press the knife to the surface of the disc, evenly distributing the force of pressure.
  6. Sharpening is carried out in several stages. When the cutter is warm, take a break to allow the metal to cool.
  7. Blades cannot be pressed too hard on the disc.

Important! It is necessary to keep parts at an angle of 180 degrees.

Using a drill:

  • To do this, you need a large stone for sharpening and a drill with an iron nozzle, the diameter of which should be about 12-15 mm.
  • The edge on which the knife is attached should be in the form of a square measuring 8 by 8 mm.
  • When sharpening, the drill must be held strictly upright, pressing the part against the stone so that it does not come off.
  • The rotation mode should be no more than 400 revolutions per minute.

Important! do not allow overheating of the metal, otherwise - it will lose its properties.

With sandpaper

When the question arises of how to sharpen a knife for a meat grinder with your own hands, you can not help but mention sandpaper, it is in every house:

  1. To facilitate the work, you need to find a suitable bar and wrap a sheet of sandpaper around it, securing it with tape or rubber for reliability.
  2. Rub the cutter clockwise in a clockwise motion until you achieve the desired sharpness.
  3. Do the same with the mesh knife.

Important! This is the fastest and cheapest option, but it will help if the blades are not dull very much and need to be slightly updated. Sandpaper will not cope with serious problems.
