Technics

Wallpaper decoupage of furniture is not particularly different from the technique of gluing fragments from other materials. The difference is the use of special glue, since PVA will not work, because the wallpaper is made of thick paper.

Important! When you first begin your acquaintance with decorating furniture with your own hands, do not touch complex objects right away. You need to start your first work with simple and even surfaces, such as a refrigerator, countertop or chair seat.

Any kind of wallpaper can be used for decoupage. Vinyl wallpaper is freed from the base of the paper by pre-soaking in water. Interior items are pasted over with fragments with a picture, as well as whole canvases of wallpaper.

Necessary materials

Surface preparation

Surface preparation process:

Important! If you use furniture with a varnished surface, then varnishing must be removed with sandpaper. If you do not want to remove the varnish, you must carefully degrease the surface, then you will have to use special paint and glue.Glass surfaces are degreased with alcohol.

Decoupage process

Wallpaper decoupage of furniture is done this way:

  • After preparing the interior and drying the paint or primer, prepare a wallpaper according to the size of the product on which they will be applied, leave an allowance of about 7 cm on each side.
  • Apply glue to the work surface and wallpaper. Leave the materials for 5 minutes to absorb.
  • Apply gradually the wallpaper to the surface of the product. Attach to one side and smooth from the center to the edges with a roller.

Important! Work very carefully, as glue-soaked paper breaks very easily.

  • Let it dry well.
  • Then cut off the excess wallpaper and sand the edges of your furniture with sandpaper.
  • On top of the decorative coating, apply a layer of acrylic varnish, leave to dry completely.

Additional techniques for decorating furniture

To get a more refined appearance of interior items that are decorated, use some tricks after completing the entire decoupage process:

  • Craquelure - creates the effect of aging, manifested by small cracks. First, a paint is applied to the surface, which will be the color of the cracks, and after it dries, a craquelure varnish is applied, then an acrylic paint of the main color. The coating is cracked due to different drying times, and the effect of antiquity is created.
  • Patina - also provides an opportunity to age furniture. Most often, patina is applied to metal parts and edges, it darkens them.
  • Abrasion - created by waxing on part of the surface, and then covered with a layer of paint, then - after complete drying, treated with sandpaper.
  • Toning - adding a small amount of sparkles or paint to the varnish, covering the surface, which gives the necessary shade.
  • Potal - the use of silver, gold or other metallic paints. Potal is in liquid form, in the form of a thin sheet or crumbs. The most convenient is the liquid version.

Using materials and drawings of different types, you can decorate your own furniture in different styles:
